This monthly gathering offers the opportunity for guests to explore the concepts, elements and construction of a junk journal.
Together, we may . . .

Learn how to incorporate different types of embellishments
And, for certain—Let our creativity be our guide!
You are welcome to join us and work on your existing journals or start a new one.

Bring your own assorted papers, envelopes, etc. from home, or feel free to use the supplies we provide at the session.

Light in the Darkness: A Journaling Workshop for Tending Heartache in the Face of Loss
Light in the Darkness: A Journaling Workshop for Tending Heartache in the Face of Loss
Grief touches all of us—sometimes through the loss of a loved one, a dream, a home, or even a version of ourselves. In Light in the Darkness, you'll be gently supported in making space for the many forms your grief may take. Whether your loss is recent or long past, named or unspoken, you are welcome.
Inspired by her personal experience after the sudden loss of her father—and the blog and award-winning book that followed—Anna Oginsky invites you into a practice of thoughtful journaling prompts and heartfelt conversation. This reflective workshop offers tools to help move grief out of the body and onto the page, where it can be seen, felt, and softened with compassion.
Each participant will receive a copy of Anna’s book My New Friend, Grief to keep or pass on.
Light in the Darkness
Thursday, October 15
6:30-8:30 PM
$35
Please email Anna at anna@brightonlighthouse.com if the registration fee presents a barrier to your participation.

Junk for Joy!
Junk for Joy! is all about the art of junk journaling! This is a mixed-media journaling practice and creative art form that transforms everyday materials—papers, scraps, envelopes, ephemera—into expressive, layered journals filled with texture, color, and story.
This monthly gathering offers the opportunity for guests to explore the concepts, elements and construction of a junk journal.
Together, we may . . .
Explore the elements of a junk journal including: signature, binding, pocket, tag, tuck, belly band, journaling spot, embellishment and ephemera
Construct new or work on existing junk journals (exploring covers, closures, signatures, bindings, and embellishments)
Utilize different tools relevant to junk journaling
Learn how to incorporate different types of embellishments
And, for certain—Let our creativity be our guide!
You are welcome to join us and work on your existing journals or start a new one.
Junk for Joy! is joyfully led by local artist and junk journaling maven, Kathleen Hodges.
Bring your own assorted papers, envelopes, etc. from home, or feel free to use the supplies we provide at the session.
And if you’re wondering, YES—this is a great opportunity to come and explore ideas for your mixed media art journals as well.
Junk for Joy!

Offered every third Monday 6:30-8:30 in the Carriage House Art Studio at Brighton Light House.

Connectworks! Michigan—Past, Present, and Future
This year for our annual Connectworks! event, we welcome Pete Martin, Director of Portfolio Management at the MSU Research Foundation, for an inspiring talk about entrepreneurship in our great state of Michigan.
Through his talk, Michigan—Past, Present, and Future, Pete invites us to take a dive into Michigan’s entrepreneurial history. Learn how our state was built and some of the many ways that Michiganders have changed the world. Along the way, we’ll discuss our state’s rise to prominence, subsequent fall, and how the state is rising again by focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation.
Pete Martin is the Director of Portfolio Management at the MSU Research Foundation, where he supports and scales a portfolio of hundreds of high-growth companies across Michigan. A former venture-backed founder and leader at Michigan Founders Fund, he now focuses on connecting capital, talent, and customers to help startups thrive. Known as “Mr. Michigan,” he is a relentless advocate for the state’s founders and innovation economy.
We’re also happy to have both Christina Maria Phot and Shi Lessner Photography here taking headshots for people who need a refresh, update, or just a chance to say cheese!
As is tradition, please extend the invitation to join us for this special experience to your friends and colleagues interested in entrepreneurship and making connections with other Michigan professionals.
We look forward to seeing you at Connectworks! May 14!
